PFC Meeting, Passover 1946
About 1990, we were helping Aunt Dottie (Dorothy Postrel) clean out some things from her apartment when we came across a box containing twelve 78rpm records. They were not labeled so we had to listen to them to determine their content. We were amazed to find this recording of a 1946 passover meeting of the PFC. Dottie told us that she had a friend in the music/recording industry who came to the meeting and recorded it directly onto records. I found a recording studio that had the capability to transcribe 78 rpm records to cassette tapes. I had this done and distributed copies to the family. Years later, I had the tapes transferred to CD format.
Every time I listen to it I am touched by the energy, exuberance and the close bonds that were evident among our family members. This, for me, was what made growing up in this family such a warm, wonderful and unique experience.
World War II had just ended, the men had returned safely and some were even still in uniform (Albert Postrel and Hy Weisberg). Mollie, my grandmother, had made her signature gefilte fish and I’m sure there were carp in her bathtub for days before. Toward the end of the recording, Dorothy exclaims that this was “a 35-year dream come true”. I love her rendition of the WWII era song, “You’re a Big Girl Now”. Leo Postrel’s clowning and his Basil Rathbone imitations foreshadow his acting career. Now that most of the people speaking on the recording are gone, I’m glad we have this little time capsule as a memory.
